Preparation
- Peel the onions and slice them into thin rings, about ¼ inch thick.
- Place the sliced onions in a bowl and cover them with buttermilk. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper.
Cooking
- After soaking, remove the onions from the buttermilk, allowing excess liquid to drip off. Dip each ring into the flour mixture, ensuring they are well coated. Shake off any excess flour.
- Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes.
- Spray the air fryer basket lightly with cooking spray. Place a single layer of onion rings in the basket, ensuring they don’t overlap.
- Spray the tops of the onion rings lightly with cooking spray. Air fry for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through.
- Carefully remove the crispy onions from the air fryer and let them cool slightly on a wire rack.
Notes
To maintain crispiness, avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket and ensure the onion rings are coated evenly. You can adjust the seasoning to taste, and try adding herbs or spices for extra flavor.
