Preparation
- Start by cutting the tops and bottoms off the sweet onions, then slice them into quarters without cutting all the way through.
- Soak the onions in the buttermilk for at least 10 minutes to enhance flavor and tenderness.
Coating
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper until combined.
- Remove one onion from the buttermilk and let excess drip off. Dip it into the seasoned flour mixture, making sure to coat every exposed part. Repeat with the second onion and set aside.
Cooking
- Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) to ensure a quick, even cook.
- Lightly spray the basket with cooking spray. Place the coated onions in the air fryer basket, ensuring they aren't crowded for even cooking. Spray the tops lightly with cooking oil.
- Air fry the onions for 12-15 minutes, flipping them halfway through the cooking time.
- The onions are ready when they are golden brown and crispy. If needed, you can pop them back in for a couple of extra minutes.
Notes
To store leftovers, keep the blooming onions in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. For reheating, the air fryer works best; reheat at 350°F (175°C) for about 3-5 minutes, ensuring they regain their crispiness.
