Ingredients
Method
- Preheat the air fryer to 375°F.
- Peel the onions and trim only the tops, keeping the root ends intact.
- Place each onion root side down and cut into quarters from the top toward the root, stopping just before the root so the base stays together. Gently separate the layers to create petals.
- In a shallow bowl, mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
- In a second bowl, whisk the egg and milk until smooth.
- Coat each onion in the seasoned flour, working the flour down between the petals, then shake off excess.
- Dip each floured onion into the egg mixture, spooning it over the top to coat the inner petals.
- Return each onion to the flour mixture and coat a second time, pressing the flour gently onto all surfaces.
- Place the coated onions cut side up in the air fryer basket, leaving space between them, and lightly spray all over with cooking spray.
- Air fry for 10 to 12 minutes until the onions are tender and the coating is golden and crispy.
- Remove from the basket and let rest for 1 to 2 minutes, then serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
- Use small sweet onions so the centers soften before the coating overbrowns.
- Do not overcrowd the air fryer basket or the onions will not crisp properly.
- For extra petals, you can cut each onion into 8 sections instead of 4, still keeping the root intact.
- These are best served immediately; if needed, you can keep them warm in the air fryer at 300°F for a few minutes.
