Ingredients

Beef Mixture
  • 1 pound Lean ground beef Opt for lean ground beef for a healthier option.
  • 1 medium Green bell pepper, diced Adds a sweet crunch; can substitute with red or yellow peppers.
  • 1 medium Onion, diced A must-have for depth; shallots can be a great alternative.
  • 3 cloves Garlic, minced Fresh garlic enhances the dish; garlic powder can work in a pinch.
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce This adds umami; soy sauce can be used as a substitute.
  • 1 cup Beef broth For moisture and flavor; vegetable broth is a good alternative.
  • 1 cup Sloppy Joe sauce You can make your own or use a pre-packaged version.
  • Salt and pepper, to taste Essential for seasoning.
Cheesy Finish and Buns
  • 1 cup Creamy cheese sauce Use store-bought or homemade; cheddar or provolone can be melted on top.
  • 4 pieces Hamburger buns For serving; whole grain or gluten-free buns are great alternatives.

Method

Preparation
  1. Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the diced onion and green bell pepper. Cook for about 5 minutes until softened.
Cooking
  1. Add the ground beef to the skillet, break it up, and cook for 7–10 minutes until browned.
  2. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook until fragrant.
  4. Add Worcestershire sauce and beef broth, then season with salt and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  5. Pour in the sloppy joe sauce and mix well. Simmer for about 10 minutes until thickened.
Finishing Touches
  1. Heat the creamy cheese sauce according to package directions.
  2. Split the hamburger buns and air fry until warmed and lightly toasted.
  3. Assemble by spooning the beef mixture onto the bottom half of each bun, then drizzle with warm cheese sauce.
  4. Cap with the top bun and serve immediately.

Notes

Keep the filling thick to prevent soggy buns, and toast the buns in a single layer for best results. Store the beef mixture in an airtight container and reheat before serving.
